What your ascendant means
The ascendant is the starting point (1st house) of the horoscope. Its sign and its ruling planet (the Lagna lord) describe your temperament, physical constitution and the lens through which you meet life. Because the ascendant changes roughly every two hours, an accurate birth time is essential — a small error can shift the whole chart into the wrong houses.

Ascendant FAQ
Is the ascendant the same as my Sun sign?
No. Your Sun sign is where the Sun sits; your ascendant is the sign rising on the horizon at birth. In Vedic astrology the ascendant (and the Moon sign) usually matter more than the Sun sign.
Why do I need my exact birth time?
The rising sign changes about every two hours, so even a 10–15 minute error can change your ascendant and the placement of every house.
Vedic vs Western rising sign — why are they different?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsha by default), which differs from the Western tropical zodiac by about 24°, so your Vedic ascendant is often one sign earlier.
